Doing the Gold Coast with kids on a budget comes down to one rule: spend on the park tickets, save on everything around them. Stay at our Miami motel from $125 a night. Burleigh Beach is 200m down Sixth Avenue, parking is free and the pool is on site. Plan the parks around rest days and the week feels like a holiday — not four ticket days in a row.
When the school holiday rush hits
Queensland spring school holidays run Saturday 19 September to Monday 5 October 2026. Queensland kids are back on Tuesday 6 October. NSW public schools break Monday 28 September to Friday 9 October. NSW Term 3 finishes Friday 25 September; students return Tuesday 13 October.
The overlap week through the Monday 5 October long weekend — King's Birthday in Queensland, Labour Day in NSW — is when family rooms disappear.

Gold Coast with kids on a budget — which park which day
Do not stack two thrill parks back to back. Buy tickets online on the operator sites before you arrive. Drive times from our door stay on the theme park accommodation page.
Match the week to your tickets. Village Roadshow's 3, 5 and 7-day Multi Park Passes run on consecutive days (Movie World FAQ), so a beach day in the middle still uses a pass day. Run those parks back to back with the gentlest one in the middle, or buy single-day tickets and spread them out. Dreamworld's 3 Day Ticket covers Dreamworld, WhiteWater World and SkyPoint and can be used within seven days of your first visit (Dreamworld tickets), so a rest day doesn't cost you a park day. At the Village Roadshow parks, under-3s get in free and child tickets cover ages 3 to 13 — confirm on the operator site when you buy.
Currumbin first. Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary opens 9am (last admission 3:30pm), so it suits a half day while the kids still have legs. It's the one park that lets you bring your own picnic, snacks and bottled water (no glass, no alcohol — Sanctuary FAQ). Shows, keeper talks and unlimited miniature train rides are included in entry. The wild lorikeet feeding outside the main entrance at 8am and 4pm is free — no ticket needed, gold coin for a tray. Lost Valley isn't pram-friendly. Quokka Nook's launch weekend is 18–20 September. The Sanctuary car park is paid. Without a car: G:link two stops south to Burleigh Heads, then bus 700 south. The 700 does not stop at Miami.
Movie World — one full day. Warner Bros. Movie World runs 10am–5pm from 19 September to 11 October 2026 (term-time hours are shorter). Confirm before you go. Without a car, ride G:link north to Helensvale and change to bus TX7 for Movie World, Wet'n'Wild and Dreamworld. Parent Swap lets one adult ride while the other waits with a child, then swap without queuing again. The Taz Rest Stop in the Kids' WB! Fun Zone has a feeding area and microwaves.
Sea World the next day. Animals and shows break up two ride days. Sea World runs 10am–5pm, 19 September to 11 October 2026. Without a car, ride G:link north to Broadbeach South or Surfers Paradise, then bus 705. Sea World has on-site parking — check seaworld.com.au for charges. Parking here is free, subject to availability (one permit per room). Stay notes: Sea World accommodation.
Wet'n'Wild to close the Village Roadshow block. It shares Movie World's Oxenford address and the TX7 bus. Little ones head for Wet'n'Wild Junior. Hours change by season — confirm on Wet'n'Wild park info before you pack towels, and check the wind forecast for a water day.
Rest day. Theme park days are long. Put the beach, the pool, Paddock Bakery 150m, and Aldi across the road in the middle of the week. Swim between the red and yellow flags. Miami Marketta is Wednesday to Saturday, 5–10pm, free entry. James Street is two tram stops south. Every Translink trip is 50 cents. Kids aged 5 to 14 travel free on weekends with an orange Child go card. Free things to do in Burleigh if you want a list.
Dreamworld after the rest day. Same M1 run north as Movie World, or G:link to Helensvale then TX7. Dreamworld lists hours and shows on its calendar. WhiteWater World is seasonal, so confirm it's open rather than assuming. Check Dreamworld's help and FAQs for food and parking rules before you pack.
Arrive at opening. Weekends and the QLD/NSW overlap week are the busiest. Download the Village Roadshow Theme Parks app for maps, show times and ride wait times, and check each park's maintenance schedule the week you go.
Which park suits which age
Heights change. Check each ride page before you promise anything, and ask Guest Services for a height check on arrival at the Village Roadshow parks. Children under 14 must be with an adult at those parks.

Feeding kids for less
Aldi is across the road — stock up on snacks, water bottles and breakfast before park days. Every room has a microwave, bar fridge and kettle, which covers breakfast and a packed morning tea. Paddock Bakery is 150m away.
Currumbin lets you bring your own picnic. Movie World and Sea World only allow home-prepared food for guests with dietary requirements or medical conditions, and takeaway is never allowed in (Movie World FAQ). Eat a big breakfast, plan an early dinner and budget for lunch in the park. The Village Roadshow parks are card-only. On a rest day, Miami Marketta's street food is an easy family dinner.
Why a Miami motel beats a park hotel in the holidays
Park-adjacent resorts sell convenience and ticket bundles. You pay for a bed next to the gates, then eat resort food, then sit in the same strip after 5pm. The parks are a day out. You arrive, you ride, you leave.

G:link and bus 765 stop at the Christine Avenue stop on our corner. For bus 700 (Currumbin and Coolangatta) or 777 (Gold Coast Airport), ride G:link two stops south to Burleigh Heads — neither bus stops at Miami.
Coming by train from Brisbane? From 19 September to 11 October 2026, railbuses replace Gold Coast line trains between Varsity Lakes and Boggo Road for most of that window, with more changes after 5 October. Allow extra time. G:link from our corner still runs.
