A romantic getaway Burleigh Heads weekend does not need a resort. The good hours are the free ones: sunrise on the north end of Burleigh Beach, the headland, sunset on the hill. We are in Miami, on the Christine Avenue corner — 200m down Sixth Avenue to the sand, and two tram stops south to James Street.
Romantic getaway Burleigh Heads — why couples skip Surfers
Surfers is further north and built for crowds. Burleigh is built for slow mornings: a headland of pandanus and rainforest, a compact restaurant strip, and a beach that empties out by mid-morning on a weekday.
The trade-off couples usually worry about is price. It does not apply here. The best hours — first light on the sand, the Oceanview Track, golden hour on the hill — cost nothing, so the money goes on one good dinner instead of a room you barely sit in.
Where you actually are
Burleigh Gold Coast Motel sits on the Gold Coast Highway in Miami QLD, corner of Christine Avenue, between Burleigh Heads and Miami Beach. We are not in the village.
Burleigh Beach — 200m straight down Sixth Avenue. North Burleigh SLSC and North Burleigh Lookout are this end of the sand, not the headland.
Paddock Bakery — 150m. Wood-fired sourdough and breakfast from 6am.
Aldi — across the road. Microwave, bar fridge and kettle in every room, so a hill picnic does not have to be a cafe bill.
James Street, the headland, Justins Park — along the Oceanway, or two tram stops south (Second Avenue, then Burleigh Heads). That is not a two-minute walk.
G:link and bus 765 stop on our corner. Fares are 50 cents. Leave the car in the lot (one permit per room, subject to availability) and put the money toward dinner.
A day that stays on foot
Before breakfast — North Burleigh Lookout
This end of the beach, up the short steps off Little Burleigh. You look north along the coast toward the Surfers skyline. It is the quietest of the three lookouts, which is why almost nobody writes about it. First light and a takeaway coffee, and you will likely have it to yourselves.
Coffee within a couple of minutes
Paddock Bakery is 150m, in a restored weatherboard with a garden out the back. Open from 6am; weekends fill from about eight. Commune Cafe sits on the highway a short walk south — brunch, same stretch, no tram required. For James Street coffee, take the two stops.
Afternoon — the creek or the track
Tallebudgera Creek is the calmer swim: flat, sheltered, grass and pines to lie on afterwards. Route 700 from Miami One (~300m) runs south that way.
If you would rather walk, the Oceanview Track through Burleigh Head National Park climbs from Goodwin Terrace to Tumgun Lookout. The headland is about 2km along the Oceanway from us — not a drive-up, despite what the map pin suggests. Park at the bottom, or tram two stops and walk in. Between June and early November, humpbacks pass close enough to watch from the top without a boat.
Golden hour — Burleigh Hill
The grassy slope above the point is where this suburb watches the sun drop behind the hinterland while the surfers work the point break below. Bring a blanket and something from Aldi across the road. It is about 2km along the Oceanway, and it is worth the walk back in the dark.
Date night — highway, then two tram stops
On the highway toward the village
Light Years at 1848 Gold Coast Highway does Pan-Asian share plates and cocktails. Monday to Thursday from 5pm; Friday to Sunday from midday. Dog-friendly on the outdoor seats. It is the closest proper date-night table to us.
Manny's Wine & Fish at 1837 Gold Coast Highway is small — Greek-Mediterranean, seafood, an open kitchen. Open from 4pm, seven nights.
James Street — two tram stops south
Maman Bar & Kitchen at 49 James Street runs Mediterranean share plates and cocktails. Tuesday to Thursday from 5pm, Friday and Saturday from midday, closed Sunday and Monday.
Paloma Wine Bar at 1/12 James Street is walk-ins only, no bookings, Wednesday to Sunday from 4pm. Get there early on a Saturday.
Rick Shores sits on the sand at the base of the headland — the default anniversary table. Mention the occasion when you book. Restaurant Labart on West Street is the quieter, more serious room. The Tropic upstairs at the Pavilion is the relaxed version of the same view.
Drinks after
Nightjar is in Justin Lane — cocktails, no kitchen, the late one. Lockwood Bar is the speakeasy behind the same laneway: a red door, and you text the number on it to be let in. Burleigh Pavilion is the beachfront option; it is an adults-only room after dark and it gets loud.

A slower morning, a bathhouse, and Jellurgal
If you want a couples massage, Ciel Spa at the Mondrian on First Avenue is two tram stops south — 10am to 5pm daily. We do not have a spa on site.
Inland at Currumbin Valley, The Bathhouse at Ground has magnesium tubs and a wood-fired sauna. Tuesday to Sunday. Bring two towels.
Burleigh Headland is Jellurgal to the Kombumerri people of the Yugambeh language region. The Jellurgal Aboriginal Cultural Centre at 1711 Gold Coast Highway runs guided walks around the headland. The Walkabout is about two hours — book ahead. It changes how the rest of the weekend looks.
Best time for a couples getaway
June to early November — whale season. Humpbacks pass close enough to watch from Tumgun Lookout and Burleigh Hill without a boat. Winter days sit in the low twenties and the beaches are close to empty.
March to May — warm water, warm evenings, easier restaurant bookings.
September to November — jacarandas through the older streets, and the last whales heading south.
Arrive on a Sunday or Monday if you can. Midweek rates are lower, James Street takes walk-ins, and the headland is quieter. Skip Queensland school holidays if you want the slower version.
Markets worth timing the weekend around
Burleigh Market — every Saturday, 7am to noon, at Burleigh Heads State School (Lower Gold Coast Highway and West Burleigh Road). Produce, bread, coffee. Free entry.
Burleigh Heads Art & Craft Beachfront Markets — last Sunday of the month, Justins Park on the Esplanade. Local makers, the beach right there.
Miami Marketta — Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm, free entry, undercover. Street food and live music. No booking for a table of two.

G:link and bus 765 — Christine Avenue stop on our corner. North to Nobby Beach, Mermaid Beach, Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise, Southport and Helensvale (Airtrain change for Brisbane Airport). South to Second Avenue and Burleigh Heads.
Bus 700 — Miami One (~300m). Gold Coast Highway; south toward Currumbin, Tallebudgera Creek and Coolangatta.
Route 777 — Gold Coast Airport express, about 25 minutes, from Miami One.
Brisbane Airport — Airtrain to Helensvale, then G:link south to Christine Avenue, about two hours door to door.
Fares — 50 cents a trip with a go card or contactless.
Parking — free outdoor carpark, no height restriction, one permit per room, subject to availability.
If it rains, David Fleay Wildlife Park is inland at West Burleigh — platypus, koalas, a bird show, and quieter than the theme parks up north.

Are the Burleigh markets on every weekend?
Burleigh Market runs every Saturday, 7am to noon, at Burleigh Heads State School. The beachfront Art & Craft markets at Justins Park run on the last Sunday of the month only. Miami Marketta is open Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm.
