A good weekend away doesn’t have to cost the earth. A lot of the best things you can do as a couple around Burleigh Heads are free, or pretty close to it — and most of them are within walking distance of our front door. Here’s how we’d spend a couple of days here without blowing the budget.

Walk the Burleigh headland

The Burleigh Head National Park track is about 1.2km from the motel, maybe fifteen minutes on foot. It follows the coastline with the Pacific on one side and rainforest on the other, and there’s no entry fee. If you’re here between June and October, keep an eye on the water — humpbacks pass close to the headland on their way north, and you’ll often spot them from the cliffs. Go early if you can, before it warms up and the track gets busy.

Sunset at Burleigh Hill

Closer to home, Burleigh Hill is about 1.1km away — a fourteen-minute stroll. It’s a grassy spot above the beach, and come late arvo it fills up with locals doing exactly what you’ll want to do: spreading out a rug and watching the sun drop behind the headland. Grab something from Coles or IGA at Miami One on the way (it’s 300m from us) and make a picnic of it. Hard to beat for a cheap night out.

Learn to surf at Kirra

Kirra Beach is about fifteen minutes south down the highway, and it’s home to one of the best right-handers on the coast. A few local surf schools run beginner lessons you can do together — figure on $60 to $80 each for a couple of hours, board and rashie included. You don’t need any experience. Most people walk out grinning and already planning the next one.

Local transport and access

⚠️  PHASE 1 NOTICE: The Miami One bus stop is a 300m walk away. Light Rail construction is occurring on the Gold Coast Highway. Allow extra time when travelling during this work phase. Route 700 runs every 15 minutes for easy access.

Getting Around

We’re right on the Gold Coast Highway at the corner of Christine Avenue. Bus route 700 stops out the front and runs every fifteen minutes, so you can leave the car parked and still get up and down the coast easily. There’s also the 777 straight to the airport, and with a Go Card it’s 50 cents a trip. One heads-up: there’s light rail construction along the highway at the moment, so allow a few extra minutes when you head out. The new Christine Avenue transport hub is opening right near us too, which’ll make getting around easier again.
