Footy Friday, a musical opening in Broadbeach and Father's Day on Sunday. The things to do on the Gold Coast this weekend start with the Titans hosting the Dolphins at Robina on Friday night, run through markets on Saturday and land on a warm, dry Father's Day 200m from Burleigh Beach.

The forecast is kind: dry all three days, low-to-mid 20s Friday and Saturday, closer to 27°C on Sunday. Beach weather without the summer crowd.

Skip the hire car if you can. G:link and bus 765 stop at the Christine Avenue stop on our corner. G:link runs north to Broadbeach, Surfers Paradise and Southport. Routes 700 and 777 stop at Miami One (~300m). 50-cent Translink fares with a go card or contactless.

Rooms from $125/night when you book direct.

Things to do on the Gold Coast this weekend — Burleigh Beach 200m from Burleigh Gold Coast Motel, Miami QLD.

Friday 4 September: Titans v Dolphins, or opening night at The Star

Check in from 2pm. Burleigh Beach is 200m straight down Sixth Avenue, about a two-minute walk, so a swim before dusk is the easy start. Paddock Bakery is 150m if you want Saturday breakfast sorted.

NRL Round 27: Gold Coast Titans v Dolphins. Cbus Super Stadium, Robina, 6pm. The South East Queensland derby, and the Titans' last home game of the regular season. About 20 minutes from the motel. Bus 765 from the stop on our corner heads toward Robina. Park once here and let the bus do the rest.

Mamma Mia! opens at The Star Gold Coast. The Very Popular Theatre Company's 25th-anniversary production begins its limited season at The Star Theatre, Broadbeach, on Friday 4 September at 7:30pm, running through Sunday 20 September. Thirty-one performers, 22 ABBA songs, an all-Australian cast. G:link north from our corner, about 15 minutes by car. Tickets at mammamiagoldcoast.com.au.

Miami Marketta. About 10 minutes away and fully undercover. Street food from 5pm, free live music on the Cargo Stage, free entry. Global vendors, boutique bars, no bookings needed for small groups.

Surfers Paradise Beachfront Markets. Along the Esplanade, 4pm–9pm, free. More than 100 stalls. G:link north from the stop, roughly 25 minutes, and no parking to sort out at the other end.

Live music and street food at Miami Marketta on a weekend night, a short walk from Burleigh Gold Coast Motel.

Saturday morning: two markets before noon

Burleigh Farmers Market runs every Saturday 7am to 12 noon, rain or shine, in the grounds of Burleigh Heads State School (corner of West Burleigh Road and the Lower Gold Coast Highway). Entry is free. This is the growers' market: fruit and veg, seafood, bakery, honey, plants. Arrive early, the good finds move.

Love Me Again Market takes over Miami Marketta from 8am to 12pm on Saturday 5 September. Pre-loved designer and on-trend fashion, coffee and food vendors on site, free entry, and it is all indoors and accessible. Bring a market bag.

Two markets, ten minutes apart, both done before lunch. Aldi is across the highway if you are feeding a room for the weekend.

Walk the SURFACE mural trail from our front door

The SURFACE murals are permanent, and the trail runs past Burleigh Gold Coast Motel. Justine McAllister painted "1910 Gold Coast Highway", our address, on the gable wall during Surface Festival 2024, so the self-guided walk starts at the door.

From there it is an easy walk or ride: more than 50 large-scale works through Miami, north to Nobby's Beach and south into Burleigh Heads. Free, outdoors, every day of the year.

Saturday: pick a lane

Mamma Mia! matinee or evening. Saturday shows at The Star Theatre are 2pm and 7:30pm. The matinee leaves the beach free either side of it.

HOTA, Surfers Paradise. The HOTA Gallery exhibition of highlights from the White Rabbit Collection of Chinese contemporary art is free and open daily, 10am–4pm. A good air-conditioned gap between the sand and whatever you booked at night. The Gold Coast Eisteddfod also runs at HOTA and citywide venues through 11 September if you want to catch a session.

Miami Marketta again. Street food from 5pm, free entry. Saturday night the laneway hosts GOOSEMANIA, the Loose Goose album launch for Going Nowhere Fast (ticketed, in the venue's separate space — the food stalls stay open to the public).

Or stay south. James Street in Burleigh Heads is a short walk for dinner. Busy, local, and you can be back at the motel without a car.

Whale watching from Burleigh Hill in July — peak humpback season near Burleigh Gold Coast Motel.

Sunday 6 September: Father's Day

Sunday 6 September is Father's Day, and it is the warmest day of the three. Book anything with a table early.

Markets first. The HOTA Farmers & Artisan Market runs 6am–11:30am beside Evandale Lake. The Broadbeach Art & Craft Markets set up at Kurrawa Park, Broadbeach, 8am–2pm, on the first and third Sunday of the month, so this one is on. G:link covers both from our corner.

Whales. Early September is peak humpback season off the point. Walk the Burleigh Head National Park track from the beach around to Tallebudgera Creek, about 2km with no entry fee, and give Tumgun Lookout ten quiet minutes. Free, and it is the best thing Dad will do all weekend.

Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary is about 15 minutes south. Koala encounters, easy half-day, bus 700 from Miami One (~300m) if you skip the car. Balter Taproom at Currumbin is running a Father's Day session if beer is closer to the point.

Mamma Mia! plays 1pm and 6pm on Sunday. A matinee, then dinner in Broadbeach, then G:link home.

On any weekend of the year

Even when the calendar is quieter, Burleigh holds up. Beach 200m down Sixth Avenue. Oceanway to the headland. The mural trail every day. Farmers market every Saturday. Miami Marketta Wednesday to Saturday from 5pm. Outdoor pool back at the motel, free for guests, open all year. For the doorstep list any week, see things to do near Burleigh Motel and our See & Do guide.

Lime e-bikes at Justins Park, Burleigh Heads, with the headland behind — an easy ride or stroll from Burleigh Gold Coast Motel.

Getting around without the car

The Christine Avenue stop is on our corner.

  • G:link — north to Broadbeach (The Star, Kurrawa Park), Surfers Paradise, Southport and Helensvale, with an Airtrain change for Brisbane Airport. South to Burleigh Heads.

  • Bus 765 — same stop. Toward Robina for the footy.

  • Routes 700 and 777 — Miami One (~300m). 700 north to Broadbeach and Surfers, south through Burleigh toward Currumbin and Coolangatta. 777 is Gold Coast Airport only, about 25 minutes. Do not treat 700 as an airport bus.

  • Fares — 50 cents a journey with a go card or contactless tap on and off.

Free on-site parking at the motel, one permit per room, subject to availability. Street parking on Christine Avenue as well. For a Friday-night derby or a Father's Day lunch in Broadbeach, parking once and using G:link or 765 is the calmer move.

Triple room with a double and single bed, ceiling fan and TV at Burleigh Gold Coast Motel — sleeps 3 from $165 a night.
