There’s a video we reckon every parent planning a Gold Coast trip should watch. A family from Wellington brought their kids over for the school holidays, hit Movie World, Sea World and Wet’n’Wild, and filmed the lot — narrated by their kid, who is genuinely thrilled by every ride, every splash and every animal. Flying In From New Zealand (or Further Afield)?
The Gold Coast is one of the easiest overseas trips a Kiwi family can make. Direct flights from Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch land at Gold Coast Airport in under three hours — no long haul, no layovers, just land and go. The Three Big Theme Parks — What to Expect
Warner Bros. Movie World (about 35 minutes north)
Movie World is the big, brash one, built around the Warner Bros. film world — DC superheroes, Looney Tunes, the lot. Kids who’ve grown up on those films light up the moment they walk in. The rides run from gentle to full-on: Superman Escape goes 0 to 100km/h in two seconds, Batwing Spaceshot fires you 61 metres straight up, and the DC Rivals HyperCoaster is the one the older kids will still be talking about on the flight home. For the littlies, the Main Street parade is the highlight — and it’s exactly that wide-eyed moment the kid in the video captures. Buy your tickets online before you go; it’s almost always cheaper and you skip the queue at the gate.
Sea World (about 30 minutes north, on The Spit)
Sea World surprises people — it’s far bigger than they expect, with thrill rides, wildlife and kids’ zones all in one. For younger kids, Nickelodeon Land is a whole precinct of its own, with SpongeBob, the Ninja Turtles and gentle rides that keep them happy for hours. For older kids, the Jet Rescue Coaster is a fast, fun launch coaster, and Trident’s worth a go too. Then there’s the wildlife — seals, polar bears, rays and penguins up close, which no other park here really does.
The current feature is Sea Jellies Illuminated, a lit-up jellyfish display paired with a working Griffith University research lab — the kind of thing kids actually remember. And don’t skip Sea World Cruises: dolphin feeding and, in season, whale watching out on the water. Book that one ahead in the school holidays, it fills fast.

Wet’n’Wild (next to Movie World at Oxenford)
Wet’n’Wild is the one built for a hot Gold Coast day. The Giant Wave Pool is where families base themselves, and H2Oasis is the kids’ zone with smaller slides and splash areas. The bigger kids will make a beeline for the Super 8 Aqua Racer, River Rapids and the Tornado — that last one gets the loudest screams in the park. It gets busy in the holidays, so get there at opening, grab your spot at the wave pool, and hit the big slides before the queues build. It’s right next to Movie World, so plenty of families do both across two days.
