Why Burleigh Is the Best Place to Stay on the Gold Coast

Skip Surfers Paradise. Stay in Burleigh and Miami — the southern Gold Coast's best kept secret. Great beaches, world-class food, street art, festivals, and none of the tourist crowds.

Burleigh and Miami sit together on the southern Gold Coast — two suburbs, one of the best stretches of coastline in Australia. This is where locals come. This is where smart travellers base themselves. Here is everything you need to know about the district.

Burleigh Beach & Headland

Surfers Paradise has the name, but Burleigh has the beach. Golden sand, consistent waves, and the iconic headland backdrop make Burleigh Beach one of Australia's best — patrolled, family-friendly, and never as crowded as the beaches further north.

The Burleigh Head National Park walking track starts at the south end of the beach. The loop takes about 30 minutes through coastal rainforest with ocean views the whole way. Spot koalas in the fig trees. Free to enter, no car required.

Burleigh Gold Coast Motel is 200 metres from the sand. Not a 10-minute drive. Not a shuttle bus. 200 metres.

North Burleigh — The Local's End

North Burleigh sits just above the main beach and has its own distinct identity — quieter, more local, and home to some of the best small venues on the Gold Coast.

North Burleigh Lookout at Little Burleigh is the spot. Perched above the rocks with the Pacific Ocean in front, Surfers Paradise skyline to the north and Coolangatta headland to the south — one of the great free views on the Gold Coast. Sunset here is unmissable.

The North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club serves breakfast with ocean views and cold beers at the end of the day. Granddad Jack's Craft Distillery — Gold Coast's first craft distillery — is a 2-minute walk from the beach. Tours, tastings, and make-your-own-gin experiences. Precinct Brewing Co brings craft beer to a repurposed industrial space on Christine Ave.

James Street & Burleigh Village

James Street is the heart of Burleigh village — packed with cafes, restaurants, and bars all within walking distance of the motel. This is where Gold Coast chefs open their own places. This is where locals actually eat.

Paddock Bakery — 150m from our door. Wood-fired sourdough, pastries, and all-day breakfast from 6am. A Burleigh institution. Rick Shores — beachfront Asian fusion, book well ahead. Justin Lane — rooftop pizza and cocktails with ocean views. Local Burleigh — beer garden, lobster rolls, dog friendly. Burgster — the local burger favourite.

Surfers Paradise has chain restaurants and tourist menus. Burleigh has the real thing.

Miami — Art, Culture and Community

Miami is the motel's home suburb — sitting between Burleigh Heads to the south and Mermaid Beach to the north. Quieter than Burleigh village, more creative, and home to some of the Gold Coast's most interesting venues and community spaces.

Miami Marketta runs Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights — street food from around the world, live music, and a genuinely local crowd. One of the best regular nights out on the Gold Coast. Walk there from the motel or catch the bus.

Roji Cat Beer Bar on Lemana Lane is a Japanese laneway-style bar and brewery — 12 house beers on tap, 24 sakes, and a karaoke room. The Miami Tavern is an iconic local pub, newly renovated with ocean views from the deck.

And then there's Surface Festival — Miami's annual street art celebration that transforms the suburb every July. 52 murals permanently on display across Miami, Burleigh, and Nobby's Beach. Pick up the mural map and walk the self-guided trail — it starts at our front door. Burleigh Gold Coast Motel is proud to host one of the festival's murals — painted in full glory on our facade for all of Miami to see. See our 2024 mural in the highlights.

We are also neighbours and supporters of two of Miami's most celebrated creative businesses — Mint Art House at 2190 Gold Coast Highway and artist Justine McCallister at 1910 Gold Coast Highway, both part of the Miami Business Centre creative community.

Markets & Live Music

Every Sunday the Burleigh Markets take over the beachfront. Local produce, handmade goods, live music, ocean views. One of the best markets in Queensland — walk there from the motel, no parking stress.

The Village Markets are on the first and third Sunday of each month — fashion, art, and design.

Miami Marketta — Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights. The Gold Coast's best regular night out.

Getting Around — No Car Needed

Lime bike hire at Burleigh Heads park — getting around Gold Coast without a car

One of the best things about staying in Burleigh and Miami is that you do not need a car. Everything is walkable — beach, cafes, restaurants, markets, the headland, the mural trail.
