Skip Surfers Paradise. Stay in Burleigh and Miami — the southern Gold Coast’s best-kept secret. Great beaches, world-class food, street art, festivals, and none of the tourist crowds.

Burleigh and Miami sit together on the southern Gold Coast — two suburbs, one of the best stretches of coastline in Australia. This is where locals come. This is where smart travellers base themselves. Here’s everything you need to know about the district — and why it’s the best place to stay on the Gold Coast.

Burleigh Beach & Headland

Surfers Paradise has the name, but Burleigh has the beach. Golden sand, consistent waves, and the iconic headland backdrop make Burleigh Beach one of Australia’s best — patrolled, family-friendly, and never as crowded as the beaches further north.

The Burleigh Head National Park walking track starts at the south end of the beach. The loop takes about 30 minutes through coastal rainforest with ocean views the whole way. Spot koalas in the fig trees. Free to enter, no car required.

Burleigh Gold Coast Motel is 200 metres from the sand. Not a 10-minute drive. Not a shuttle bus. 200 metres — about a 2-minute walk down Sixth Avenue.

North Burleigh — The Local’s End

North Burleigh sits just above the main beach and has its own distinct identity — quieter, more local, and home to some of the best small venues on the Gold Coast. North Burleigh Lookout at Little Burleigh is the spot: perched above the rocks with the Pacific in front, Surfers Paradise skyline to the north and Coolangatta headland to the south — one of the great free views on the Coast, and unmissable at sunset.

The North Burleigh Surf Life Saving Club serves breakfast with ocean views and cold beers at the end of the day. Granddad Jack’s Craft Distillery — the Coast’s first craft distillery — is a 2-minute walk from the beach. Precinct Brewing Co brings craft beer to a repurposed industrial space on Christine Avenue.

James Street & Burleigh Village

James Street is the heart of Burleigh village — cafes, restaurants and bars, all within walking distance of the motel. This is where Gold Coast chefs open their own places, and where locals actually eat.

Paddock Bakery — 150m from our door, wood-fired sourdough and all-day breakfast from 6am, a Burleigh institution. Rick Shores — beachfront Asian fusion, book well ahead. Justin Lane — rooftop pizza and cocktails with ocean views. Local Burleigh — beer garden, lobster rolls, dog-friendly. Burgster — the local burger favourite.

Miami — Art, Culture and the Street-Art Walk at Our Door

Miami is the motel’s home suburb, between Burleigh Heads and Mermaid Beach — quieter than Burleigh village, more creative, and home to some of the Coast’s most interesting venues. It’s also the heart of Surface Festival, Miami’s annual street-art celebration that turns the suburb into an open-air gallery every July — and Burleigh Gold Coast Motel is on the trail, not just near it.

Our facade carries one of the festival’s murals — painted in full glory on our wall by artist Justine McCallister for Surface 2024, at 1910 Gold Coast Highway. More than 50 murals stay up permanently across Miami, Burleigh and Nobby Beach, so the gallery is open year-round. Grab the mural map and walk the self-guided trail — it starts at our front door. You’re not staying near the street art. You’re sleeping under it.

We’re also neighbours and supporters of Miami’s creative community — Mint Art House at 2190 Gold Coast Highway and the studios around the Miami Business Centre. Surface Festival runs each July (1–19 July in 2026), and our mural has featured in Experience Gold Coast's festival coverage. surfacefestival.com.au.

After dark, Miami Marketta runs Wednesday, Friday and Saturday nights — street food from around the world, live music and a genuinely local crowd, a short walk from the motel. Roji Cat Beer Bar on Lemana Lane is a Japanese laneway bar and brewery — 12 house beers, 24 sakes and a karaoke room. The Miami Tavern is the iconic local pub, newly renovated with ocean views from the deck.

We're honoured to have Justine McCallister's work on our wall 🎨 When Justine painted this for Surface Festival, she didn't just decorate a building — she gave our little motel a piece of the Gold Coast's art story. Every guest who walks in the door, every local who drives past, gets to see it. We're so grateful. Thank you, Justine — for the colour, the craft, and for making our corner of Miami something people stop to photograph. 💙 The self-guided Surface Festival mural walk starts right here at our front door.

Markets & Live Music

Every Sunday the Burleigh Markets take over the beachfront — local produce, handmade goods, live music, ocean views. One of the best markets in Queensland; walk there from the motel, no parking stress. The Village Markets run the first and third Sunday of each month — fashion, art and design. And Miami Marketta is the Coast’s best regular night out, three nights a week.
